The SpyTec is the next GPS tracker in our series of GPS tracker reviews. The SpyTec is one of the most popular GPS trackers on the market right now – but is it worth the price and monthly fee? Follow along with us as we check out the SpyTec’s battery life, portability, durability, and its app.
SpyTec’s Primary Uses
The SpyTec is mainly a GPS tracker that can be used for luggage, kids, vehicles, or any assets that you want to keep track of. At under 2.75 inches in its largest dimension and with its weight at around 2 ounces, it’s designed to be portable. There are some optional accessories like this magnetic case (check out here on Amazon) that make the device even more portable and perfect for discrete placement on a small or large size car, truck, motorcycle, or boat.
The SpyTec is also perfect for tracking people. Want to keep track of your kid to and from school? Want to make sure your elderly relative got home safely after leaving your place? Unlike a bluetooth tracker, the SpyTec updates its location regularly to a map that you can see on your computer or phone. You can set up alerts, view trip history, and much more with the desktop and phone apps. It can be easily fitted to a backpack or keychain, which also makes it great for people tracking.
The SpyTec includes a mini-USB charger for charging the device. The battery life depends on how often you want the device to update to the tracking software. The device’s monthly fee (more on that in a minute) scales to how frequently you want the device to update its location. The more frequently the device updates, the faster the battery will drain. On its most frequent setting, we found that the battery lasted just under a week. The other setting for less frequent updates (every 60 seconds) can help the battery last to around two weeks. There’s an optional battery extender that you can purchase that hooks your SpyTec into your vehicle’s battery power for permanent tracking and no wall charging.
First thing to know: there’s no contract with the SpyTec’s monthly fee. There are no commitments and you can cancel anytime. As of the date of this post, the basic plan (which updates every 60 seconds) is $24.95 per month. The premium plan updates the SpyTec’s location every 5 seconds and is $44.95 per month.
SpyTec’s Primary Features
No matter which monthly fee you choose, you will always have access to the SpyTec’s desktop and mobile apps. Here are some of the things that you can see or do with it:
- Track trips on Google Maps or Google Earth
- 1 year of historical trip data
- Mileage reports
- Fuel reports
- Geofencing (virtual barriers for the device that you can set up within the app)
SpyTec STI GL300 Cons
Because of its costly monthly fee, we really don’t think that the SpyTec is great for only being a luggage tracker. The technology would still work and the battery life is perfect for it, but there are cheaper options with less battery life and and a lower monthly fee that are probably better suited as a standalone luggage tracker.
Where the SpyTec Shines
The SpyTec is a perfect fit for those that are using it as an elderly tracker, purse tracker, kid tracker, or car tracker. Any combination of those is great. It’s also perfect for those that want a discrete tracker that has a decent battery life and customizable options.
However, if you are only looking at using the device as a car charger, want some extra info about your vehicle, and don’t care about discreteness, we think the Vyncs is a better pick. It provides more data, hooks right in to your car’s OBD computer port, and is powered by your car’s battery. You can check out our full review of the Vyncs for more information.
