As pet owners, we know that feeling of wanting to check on our furry friends back at home while we’re out. Buying a pet camera is not only great for entertaining your pet but it’s also great for monitoring pets that might get a little stir-crazy during the day. A pet camera also serves a secondary purpose as a security camera for your home!
Using a pet camera allows you to not have to rely on your neighbor or family member to check on your pet when you’re gone. Many pet cameras allow you to video chat with your pet and some even allow you to give them a treat! Once primarily an airline shopping magazine gimmick product, the pet camera market has grown considerably over the past few years.
But what is the best pet camera for 2018? We checked out 5 pet cameras and were surprised with the different types of them out there. Our two favorites are in green in the table below but let’s check out the specs of all of these cool products!

The Petcube company has been around since 2012 and they currently have 3 pet cameras out on the market: the Petcube Play, the Petcube Camera, and the Petcube Bites. The Petcube play has a 1080p HD camera that can swivel 138° and it’s controlled by your smartphone. At only 3″ tall and 3″ wide, it’s quite small only weighs about 1 pound. For pets that might protest to being spied on, it also has a chew-proof cord. It’s sleek, stylish, and looked really neat sitting on our bookcase. The Petcube has an Android and iOS compatible app that opens up 2-way HD audio communication. The Petcube play really shines with its interaction abilities. You can control a laser pointer from your phone to play with your cat back at home! Check out the Petcube Play on Amazon here.
Petcube Bites Pet Camera and Automatic Treat Dispenser
Petcube stays busy with a diverse smart pet product line and the Petcube Bites is one of the sleekest automatic pet feeders out right now. Like the Petcube Play, it features a 1080p HD camera and it also swivels 138°. It also has a 2-way audio stream. Where the Petcube Bites differs from the Play is in its ability to be wall-mounted and, perhaps most of all, send treats to your dog when you’re gone! From the app, you can have the device drop treats on demand or on a schedule. You can also manage how many treats are dispensed each day, which we thought was really cool. The robust amount of features of the Petcube Bites pet camera really puts it near the top for us. There’s even a sensor that let’s you know when to replenish the treat chamber. This can be even more automated by its use of the Amazon Dash service – this means your treats of choice can arrive just in time with the purchase of an Amazon Dash button. The color shown is stainless steel but there’s also a black and pale pink color available. You can see the Petcube Bites here on Amazon.
PetChatz HD Pet Camera
The PetChatz HD pet camera and automatic pet feeder is perhaps the most advanced when it comes to pet cameras. Rather than just being a monitoring pet camera, the PetChatz companying is selling what the call “digital daycare” – an expansive solution designed for those needing factime with their pets. It literally video calls your dog and has 2 way microphones. The 2-way video calling system is probably what makes this the priciest pet camera on the market. Want to give your dog a treat? Press the bone button on the interface and it will drop your pet’s favorite treat. It doesn’t stop there, though! PetChatz sell an attachment that allows your dog to call you at the press of a button. We found it to be really neat, but also kind of a gimmick. It did not feel nearly as durable as the Petcube products and it just seemed unrealistic. It’s also really pricey. For those that want the full video solution, though, this is the pet camera for you!
Pawbo Life Pet Camera and Automatic Treat Dispenser
The Pawbo Life pet camera is also a solid choice. It has many of the same features as the Petcube
Bites but looks a little different and cannot be wall-mounted. It has 720p picture that can be viewed on an app. Like the Petcube Play, it has a laser that really makes it a great choice for people with only cats. The app has a push to talk function and you can even buy extension toys from the Pawbo store that you can control. Like the others, you can take pictures and video with it. The Pawbo Life also functions as an automatic treat dispenser. If you press the button on the app, it will release a treat to your awaiting pet! It’s a great choice for those that have both cats and dogs because of its treat-tossing and laser-pointing capabilities. Check out the Pawbo Life on Amazon here.
Furbo Pet Camera and Automatic Treat Dispenser
The Furbo pet camera is a really neat, versatile smart pet device. It’s also our favorite of the ones we’ve reviewed. You can also click here to see our in-depth review of why it’s our favorite.
It only has 720p resolution but boasts a massive 160° swivel range. We found that the lower resolution wasn’t really a big deal compared to the other and we appreciated the large in create in swivel range. Worried about using too much of your internet to check on your furry friend? You can also lower it from a 720p resolution to 320p to save over 60% in internet usage.
Like the others, the Furbo has two way communication with your pet at home. It also has a bark detector which is useful if your pet needs a quick pep-talk while you’re gone! You get an alert on your phone that tells you when your pet barks. The device itself has two lights on it: blue and yellow – the colors that dog can see. The light changes when you open the app so your that your dog is alerted when you open the app. We found that, while a neat idea, it didn’t seem to make a difference for us. That’s probably because our pets were already nearby because of its secondary function as an automatic treat dispenser!
Perhaps the coolest feature is the fact that Furbo allows you to toss a treat to your pet from the app. We really liked using this one! As for durability, it’s like a tank. It comes with optional adhesive to cling to your table, too. We found that it was pretty neat looking next to our Amazon Alexa. You can check out the Furbo here on Amazon.
What’s the best pet camera for 2018?
Our two favorites were the Furbo and the Pawbo Life, but not by far. We liked the Petcube Bites but felt it’s design a little too limiting and its treat feature not as cool as the Furbo. Because of its laser feature, Petcube Play’s laser feature would be great for cat owners. We generally weren’t fans of the PetChatz HD – we just didn’t like the interface for the app and the pet camera itself felt a little cheap.
Only have dogs? If you only have dogs and know they won’t find a laser pointer amusing, our recommendation is the Furbo because of its durability and treat-tossing feature. The app is also really polished and the support from Furbo is awesome! Click here to check the price on Amazon.
Have cats and/or dogs? We really liked the versatility of the Pawbo Life, but that’s because we have cats and dogs. Our cats loved the laser feature and our dogs loved the treat feature. The app was reliable and the app is really easy to use. Click here to check out the Pawbo Life’s price on Amazon.
Don’t forget, all of these devices have a secondary function as a basic security camera and some of them even work with Amazon Alexa! Even more curious? Be sure to chcek out our comparison table up top, too! Thanks for reading!
